Interior design is based on creating a space that fits your personal style, and the furniture in a room plays a large part in the feel, look, and function of your décor. Because of this, it’s important to find furniture that expresses your personality in any room of your home.
Before you can find furniture that matches your style, you need to know what your style is. It doesn’t have to fit into a certain category, like modern or farmhouse, which means that it can be a style all your own.
Think about what you like or don’t like from various homes and buildings that you have seen, including certain colors and themes. They may even be likes and dislikes that you have had since you were a child. Then incorporate the things you like into your furniture, window treatments, and other pieces of home décor. For example, if you have always loved the boldness of the color red, include it in the pattern you choose for your couch or select a red chair to add a punch of color to your room.
Another way to determine what type of furniture you might like in your space is by looking in your closet and in the mirror. What do you like to wear? What kind of hairstyle do you have? If you are personally more casual, then you will likely be more comfortable with casual furniture, like slipcovered couches and oversized armchairs made for lounging. If you prefer being dressed up, your furniture should tend toward a more formal style.
Your style also needs to take into account how you use your space. Even if you love the thought of a white fabric couch, if it’s going in your family room that is frequented by kids and pets, you may have to opt for something different for now and get the white couch when your kids are grown.
Once you have decided what your style is based on your personal preferences and how your space will be used, create a list or collect pictures of furniture that you would love to have in your home, even if you think you can’t currently afford it. This will help you visualize what you love, and you may be able to find similar pieces that cost less or they may go on sale.
Your style has to fit your budget, and so does your furniture. Don’t spend every penny on one sofa because then you won’t have the funds to add any more pieces leaving your room looking empty and unfinished. And unless you’re a minimalist, that really won’t suit your personal style.
